Description
Astro came to rescue when he was 12 weeks old. His owners had him for 3 days and then took him to the local shelter. We speculate that when they purchased him they were not informed he was deaf and then the breeder would not take him back. Astro was lucky enough to have a boxer rescue volunteer close by and left the shelter for a foster home. Astro turned 1 in July.

Often when people meet Astro their first reaction is “poor boy. Astro is not a “poor boy in any sense of the word. He is a happy well adjusted puppy. He is very friendly and outgoing. Astro get along well with other dogs. He also gets along well with birds and cats. He acts like any other dog and he has no idea that he is “supposed to hear things. He uses his other senses to make up for lack of hearing. In fact, we are often amazed to hear Astro barking from his crate the second we are home- he seems to be more in tune than my hearing dogs. I very rarely can “sneak up on Astro and he has taken over as house watchdog. He spends hours watching out the front window and then lets us know if he sees anything. He often alerts my husband when I am home long before the other dogs have noticed.

Astro is learning sign language and he is a very quick learner. Most dog trainers will tell you that dogs actually learn signs before they learn to respond to words. Astro knows sit, down, stay, kennel and come. He walks well on a leash.

Astro loves other dogs. He spends hours a day playing chase or wrestling with my own dogs. We will require that his new home has another dog. One reason is to help keep him happy and active. Another dog also serves as “ears for Astro. He follows the other dogs lead. When he sees my dogs running in for dinner he follows behind ;-)

Astro is just like any other boxer but due to his deafness we have to be extra picky when placing him. Obviously, he needs a fenced in yard. He will need a home committed to teaching him signs and never letting him off leash in an unfenced area. We also need a home with older children since younger children may startle a deaf dog and they would have a hard time understanding the special needs of Astro.

Don’t feel sorry for Astro- he does not feel sorry for himself ;-) He just wants a home where he can play and cuddle just like any other boxer boy. If you think that this special boy would fit in your home please contact us.
