**FOSTER UPDATE 2/1/07=READY FOR A NEW HOME**
he can be placed any time, but he does have a few bad habits that I am working on. He loves to play with the kids, but when they run or wrestle, he will chase them and will nip at them. He aims
at some part of their clothing and so far has the greatest success with coats.
Also, he will not come when called (stubborn little critter) if he is off lead unless he thinks you have a toy otherwise he thinks you should chase him. If you have a lead, he will heal and come, but off lead forget it. He will sit and down and place on lead or off but expects a treat.
It is probably good to keep in mind that his bladder is crowded. He does not have accidents in his kennel but he must be the first one out because he just can?t hold it. If he is crated, he will bark to potty about every two hours, but he can hold it crated for about 6 hours during the day if he has to.
He plays with everybody and shows no aggressive signs at all. But if he forgets his manners and
starts pummel play, Bierta reminds him. She gets him by the neck and holds him down on the ground with her feet, but she doesn?t bite him. But he has enormous energy and plays with any toy. His favorites are the fuzzy strip for tug and the large tennis ball for chase. He will be a wonderful pet, especially when he is better trained. They will have to follow up on the training or otherwise he will be obnoxious.***

WE MADE THE SURGERY GOAL.. THANKS TO ALL THAT DONATED. But Hero is now facing extensive and expensive physical therapy, so additional funds will be needed. Please use the DONATE button on the side bar; the donation box at the bottom of the page OR you can mail check or money order to:

MoKan Boxer Rescue would like to thank the American Boxer Rescue Association as they covered the final $2000 needed to pay Hero?s surgery bills. If you can dig deep in your pockets to help that great cause also, please go to their website at American Boxer Rescue
We are so very grateful to them as they are the only organized national group that responded to our request for assistance.

Update 11/11/06
All of the staples are now removed and the wounds are almost healed. He has one road rash burn that is still open on his left foot, but otherwise is healed. No infection and is starting to put on a little weight, but has a long way to go. So Dr. was pleased with the healing. He will have to have some therapy for his leg. The most important thing is to get some movement in his left back leg. He needs to bend the knee joint which currently he doesn?t do. There is very good movement in the hip and the breaks in the bone seem to still be stable. So we need to start working with the leg muscles. So twice a day we will wrap the leg in warm towel, get it relaxed, then push down on the hip joint
while manipulating the leg to bend at the knee to go up as much as possible. I can tell you that this is painful and is a definite two person job. He is making progress on the pottying front, but still has occasional accidents but fewer than before. He doesn?t drink very much water so I have to boil a little chicken broth so he will drink enough. He won?t drink at all out of a stainless steel bowl but does out of a plastic one. Maybe he sees his shadow??? I am feeding him a mixture of dry dog food with canned and a little tuna and macaroni and cheese to put on some weight. He usually will lick the good stuff off and leave some of the dry dog food, but
after about an hour he will come back and eat some more. He is still a little noisy in the crate when he gets bored and wants out and
he is starting to play with the toys.***

Update 11/1/06
The boy is at his foster home now. He is really nice tempered dog. He is cautious, but not afraid of new things and settled down in his crate. He can get up on his own, but with difficulty, and can walk slowly. He doesn?t want to put any weight on his leg, but I can?t blame him there. I think he was abandoned before he was hit by the car because he is very skinny. He is on antibiotics and pain meds but is fine. His next visit to the vet is on Friday to look at the staples. He has more staples than Office Max. He has a bed in the living room complete with pillow when he is out of his crate. It is good for him to roam the house and use his leg as long as he doesn?t get too rambunctious and we can work on potty training. I think he will be fine.

**UPDATE 10/29/06 - Donations received $2556
We are 1/2 way to the amount needed to pay the puppys bills. He was released from the hospital today and is resting comfortably in a critical-care foster home tonite. For the next several weeks he will have to be helped with standing and walking, but with time and patience, should make a complete recovery. Please.. if you can, donate toward his care as we have about 10 days to come up with the additional monies. Several support foundations have turned us down for assistance as he has already had the surgery and is no longer suffering. In their words, he is no longer ?in need?.

Update 10/24/06 -Donations Received: $1,178
He is still in ICU, he is eating and drinking, resting comfortably. His Orthopedic surgeon wants to keep him in ICU through the coming weekend. He wants to keep a close eye on the ankle/tibia repair.

**SURGERY UPDATE 10/20/06**
We talked to the surgeon and he plated a tibia(big bone lower leg), a femur(big bone upper leg, other side) and has also pinned together his pelvis which was crushed on one side(ilium, ishium). He had to "pop" it back out but
it went easily(all things considered)....and put in some pins. He was very pleased with the surgery and how it went, says puppy should get around just fine after recuperation.**

That needs your help! This little puppy boy was hit by a car on 10/17/06. A kind samaritan found him lying on the side of the road & notified the Overland Park KS Animal Control. She asked the shelter what would happen to him & was told that he would be put on a 3-day stray hold & if he was not claimed by his owners, he would be put to sleep as his injuries were so severe. Not wanting that to happen, this kind woman called the radio station. We found out about this poor baby after 2 radio stations aired his story, looking for help.

He has now been evaluated by a veterinary surgeon. He has a broken pelvis & both of his back legs are also broken. It is a miracle he does not have any internal injuries. He is headed off to surgery as this is being typed. The estimated cost to fix this broken baby is close to $5000 and this is a discounted rate.

Since we are a small, non-profit rescue group, donations to help pay for his care will be greatly appreciated.
