We don’t have a fence, but our dogs are trained not to get out of our yard. Why do you most always require fenced yards?
A rescued dog may carry “baggage that a puppy or other dog does not. We require fenced yards to protect that dog – and to protect its new owners – from harm or unhappiness. We do not always know the history on our Boxers, and it’s safest to assume that the dog has not been trained to a reliable, predictable recall command. The dog may bolt out of a yard and get injured before its owner could even react to it. We can't take that chance.
Therefore, not having a fenced yard will limit placement or adoption options. We will consider placing a dog that is a known escape-artist or fence jumper in a home that does not have a fenced yard. Since these dogs have proven that a fence will not contain them, having a fence does not hold the same significance or create the safety barrier that it does for dogs that are not interested in escaping. However, when we place any dog in a home without a fenced yard, we require that the dog be taken out on lead and supervised at all times. Again, this just prevents possible injury or loss of the dog. |
